Start Clean, Then Rebuild
Insulation removal and replacement makes sense when what is in the attic or walls is doing more harm than good. Insulation soaked by a roof leak, packed down and full of droppings, smoke-damaged or moldy cannot be fixed by adding more on top. It also hides the attic floor, so air sealing cannot be done until it is gone.
How we remove it
We use a high-powered vacuum that pulls loose fill and batts out of the attic into bags or a collection unit outside, so the material does not travel through the house. Batts are bagged by hand. After removal, the attic floor is cleaned so we can see and seal every gap.
Vermiculite
Some older homes have vermiculite, a pebbly gray-brown or gold loose fill. The EPA advises assuming it may contain asbestos and not disturbing it; it should be tested and, if needed, removed by an asbestos abatement contractor. We do not disturb vermiculite. If we see it, we stop and tell you.
Replacement
Once the attic is clean and sealed, we install new blown-in insulation or foam to the R-value target. For Mansfield homes, Ohio's code and ENERGY STAR point to R-49 or R-60 in the attic.

How do I know if my insulation needs to come out?

Can you remove vermiculite?
No. Vermiculite should be tested and handled by an asbestos abatement contractor. We stop work if we find it.
Is removal messy?
Vacuum removal keeps the material contained. We protect the path through the house.
Do I need to replace everything?
